Easter Prep

25 March 2012

Ok, so here’s the deal.  I’ve had this Easter party planned for ages, right?  Historically, I have thrown massive parties and loved every minute. For me, it’s all or nothing, I suppose.  So when last week as I prepared to head to New York City, I realized that because of the trip and the insanity of my personal life, I wasn’t going to be able to deal with the 40 kids and 40+ adults who had been invited to our Easter Egg Decorating party, I cancelled the party.  A swift notice on Facebook would be enough, right?

“Easter Egg Party Cancelled,” my status announced. Only a few people had RSVP’d officially anyway, so why would this be an issue?

It wasn’t an issue. That is until a little tiny 3.5 year old voice piped up……

Wait. Hold on: “Piped up”?!?!

That’s most definitely an understatement. It was more like wailing, grieving the loss of something that her very life depended on.

“We HAVE to have our party! You CAN’T cancel it, Mommy! NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Holly is coming to my house! We HAVE to have a party!”

Oh good God, child! Can’t we just have a play date?!?!?

I’m a sucker for a good argument…the moment she said, “You told me that we were going to have an Easter party! You SAID!” was the moment I realized that for once in my life, I was going to have to be ok with keeping things simple. At that point I decided to have a few of Ellie’s “best friends” over for egg decorating. Of course, after that decision was made, I just happened to become reconnected with a former best friend from Los Angeles, who just happened to be living 30 minutes from me, and who just happened to have a daughter Ellie’s age. So….yes, 3 girls turned into 4 girls and 1 boy, which turned into 4 boys and 5 girls. This I’m ok with, though I still wish I had the kahoonas to serve Mac  ‘N Cheese and Doritos.

Long story short, I’m proud of myself for keeping things small……disappointed that some people might find themselves offended , but all in all, I’m hoping and believing that most of my friends totally understand that I’m in an odd place right now, and am trying to keep my head above water.

All that to say, I’m in the throws of decorating and menu planning…and am so proud of myself for keeping it simple…and for me? This is simple…

A Real Spring Day!

8 March 2012

Today was such an amazingly, incredibly beautiful day.  After having had snow off and on Sunday and Tuesday, the sunshine, blue skies,  and 60° weather was much welcomed.  Ellie could play outside without being so bundled up that she had to waddle to get anywhere! She was able to ride around on her tricycle, attempt to drive her little tractor, and play in her playhouse to her heart’s content.  I know she loved it, and for me, spending time outside was good for my soul…and sanity. I took a long walk around the lake, and enjoyed the beauty of all the emerging green, and the family of ducks swimming around without a care in the world.

I’ve gotten out of the habit of carrying my camera around, so I don’t have any photos of the flowers that are starting to brighten up the dullness of the thawing winter ground. I’ll have to attempt that tomorrow!

There's nothing quite like having fresh cut flowers in the house!

With Spring in the air, I was of course inspired to start prepping for the upcoming Easter Egg Decorating party.  Ellie is beyond excited about it, and the invitations are finally ready to go out.  She had such a great time working on them, and we’re excited to have friends over!

I haven’t quite figured out how I’m going to deliver many of them – since mailing them doesnt’ seem very practical…I’ll figure it out, though I’m sure.  Ellie was insistent on my taking a photo of her actually assembling the invitations – she said we needed to take pictures of “how to do it.”

You take some grass, and one of the pots....

And you stuff the grass in there like this.

It makes a great, big, huge mess!

Decorating the house is up next!

WELCOME SPRING (even if it’s supposed to rain for the next 10 days….)
